I feel like I have been trying out a lot of higher end makeup recently and I have almost lost my trusty high street roots. Not that I could ever completely loose those roots! In pretty much every makeup look I wear, there are always affordable products in there but I just feel like more high end products are making their way into my everyday makeup bag. I have decided to root through my drawers and put together a beginners makeup bag for you. You may already be familiar with my ‘beginner beauty series’ where I go in detail about great affordable products for beginners. Well this one is going to be what I feel is the perfect beginners makeup bag. A straight forward guide if you will for any one who is starting to get into makeup! I will try and cover every category to give you a good feel for everything and try to give you products that will work for a range of skin types!
Primers are an essential to keep your makeup lasting all day long. If I had to recommend one product for beginners, it wouldn’t be anything you can get from your average makeup brand. The Nivea Men After Shave Balm is highly talked about on social media as it works amazing as a primer, as strange as it may sound. I personally find it to be so much better than any other primer I have tried and it really keeps your makeup in place all day!

I have tried a lot of affordable foundations. I find you get what you pay for with some foundations, but there are a couple that stand out. If I had to choose one I would pick the Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid. This will work for so many skin types and tones, it isn’t too dewy or too matte. This foundation has good coverage but can be sheered out or built up to fit difference preferences. It is just a great all rounder.
I personally love concealer. I would only recommend using a concealer if you need to correct dark circles, uneven skin tone or blemishes. Concealer can add just that little bit of extra coverage where it is needed, without slapping on layers of product. One of the best affordable concealers I have found is the LA Girl Pro Conceal. You can either use less for sheerer coverage or you can build it up in particularly tricky areas. The best thing about this concealer is that it comes in so many shades that there is guaranteed to be a shade for you, not to mention it is super smooth.
Powder is the second step in making your makeup last all day. It sets down any liquids and reduces shine throughout the day. I have combination skin, so I have some dry areas and some oily. The best powder I have found that suits both of those skin types is the Rimmel Match Perfection Loose Powder. Anyone can use this powder as it is translucent and wont change the colour of your foundation and it doesn’t dry my skin out either. It’s a little messy but it is worth it!
Bronzer is great for adding warmth and demention to the face. It just makes you look a little more healthy and alive, giving you a bit of colour back. A great all round bronzer is the Barry M Natural Dazzle Bronzer. I find it to be quite sheer, which makes it great for fair skin but can be built up for darker skin tones. It isn’t completely matte either so it gives a youthful glow too!
Blush is great for adding a pop of colour back into your face. Out of all the blushes on the market, I find the Gosh Natural Blushes are my favourite. They are pigmented, blendable and the colour range is gorgeous. They aren’t too powdery and add a nice flush to the cheeks.
Eye shadow is a very personal thing, like all makeup. It really depends if you like more natural shades or more colourful shades. The palette I want to recommend has 7 different ranges, so you can pick which ever palette floats your boat. These shadows are pigmented, blendable and really smooth. Which palette is that I hear you ask? The Zoeva Eye Shadow Palettes of course! They also make amazing affordable brushes too.. I have the Cocoa Blend palette which has a range of neutrals and colours but there are so many variations to choose from.
One thing I look for in an eye liner is longevity. There is nothing worse than putting some eye liner in your waterline and having it run and wear off within 0.7 seconds. I love the Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eye Liners. They are pigmented, creamy, smooth and best of all waterproof so they are perfect for lining your eyes!
I wanted to share with you a mascara that I find is all round great. It offers a little bit of everything: length, volume, definition and curl. The mascara I have picked is the Collection Super Size Fat Lash Mascara. It is super affordable too and it can be built up well too!
Lipsticks again are down to preference. It depends which finish you are after. This can all be a little overwhelming to a beginner so I have recommended a lipstick that come in so many shades and finishes that you can really test the water. The Sleek True Colour Lipsticks come in a whole range of shades, they are really comfortable on the lips and the colour pay off is really good. I personally love these little guys.
I wasn’t sure whether to add this in as it really isn’t necessary, but if you can get your hands on a good one then it can be that third and final step to ensuring your makeup stays in place all day long. The L’Oreal Infallible Fixing Mist is great for setting your makeup, and it actually works. It also helps all your powders and liquids marry together to keep that ‘powdered’ look at bay. Setting sprays are so worth it to me!

So my loves, there we have it! My take on the perfect beginners makeup bag. I have tried to cover everything for you although none of these products are necessary. Makeup is completely personal and you should only wear what you feel comfortable wearing! Of course, you don’t need all of this makeup but it is a really good little starter kit for anyone who wants to get into makeup. I hope you enjoyed my loves and until next time beauties…
